Structured Challenges: A Clear Path to Progress

The Healthy Back program helps you move from pain or uncertainty to strength and confidence—at your own pace.

At its core is a 5-Level System of Structured Challenges, guiding you from gentle movement to more advanced strengthening. Each level builds on the last, so you’re never pushed too far, too fast.

Who it’s for:
Beginners, those recovering from injury, or anyone looking to maintain long-term spinal health.

Prepare for your class:
Master Your Technique to learn proper muscle activation and movement, one exercise at a time before your class.

What to expect:
Each class includes a series of targeted exercises (~20–30 minutes) designed to improve coordination, strength, and flexibility. As you progress from Class 1 to 5, the challenge increases gradually—so you can track your progress and build confidence along the way.

Move at your own pace. Progress when you’re ready, or stay at a level until you’ve rebuilt your strength and stamina—there’s no pressure, just steady improvement.

Design Your Own Workout:
Mix levels within a single session to target specific muscle groups, support rehab work, or fit a shorter timeframe.

The Result
Consistent practice leads to better movement, safer strength, and a stronger, more reliable—and confident—back.

Choose the Right Exercises with Confidence - Healthy Back

Choose the Right Exercises with Confidence

Knowing what to do—and what to avoid—is one of the biggest challenges with low back exercise. The Healthy Back program takes the guesswork out, guiding you toward exercises that are right for your back.

  1. Start with Your Directional Preference
Your back responds better to certain movements than others. By identifying your Directional Preference, you begin with positions that feel more comfortable and supportive—often reducing discomfort rather than aggravating it.
  2. Identify What Your Body Needs
Not everyone needs the same focus. Some people need deeper core support; others need better control through their hips, glutes, or upper body. Our self-assessments help you identify where to focus—so you’re not just exercising, you’re targeting what matters.
  3. Work at the Right Level
The 5-Level Structured Challenge system keeps you progressing safely—challenging enough to improve, but not so hard that you risk irritation.
  4. Progress Step by Step
Within each level, the Take a Class Series gradually increases challenge. You repeat key exercises to build confidence, while new ones are introduced in a controlled, manageable way.
  5. Customize as You Improve
With the Design Your Own Workout option, you can mix levels, focus on weaker areas, or follow guidance from your physiotherapist, chiropractor or other health care practitioner.

Keep It Simple. Stay Consistent.

Instead of overwhelming you with endless options, the program focuses on a small number of effective exercises and repeatable routines—making it easier to stay consistent.

The Result
No guessing or one-size-fits-all routines—just a clear, structured path that matches your body, supports steady progress, and helps you build a stronger, more confident back.

Master Your Technique - Healthy Back

Master Your Technique

Master Your Technique: Get More From Every Exercise
Knowing which exercises to do matters—but how you do them is what makes them effective and safe.

Each exercise in a class has a corresponding short technique video, so you can learn exactly how it should feel and how to perform it correctly.

When to use them:
Use these videos before a class to prepare, or anytime you’re unsure if something feels right. They help you:

  • Position your body correctly
  • Activate the right muscles
  • Avoid unnecessary strain

So instead of guessing—or pushing through discomfort—you can quickly adjust and keep moving safely.

Why it matters
Often, it’s not about doing a different exercise—it’s about doing the same one better.

The Result
Better technique leads to more effective movement, improved support for your back, and greater confidence in every exercise.

Supports to Reduce Pain while you Exercise

Reduce Back Pain While You Exercise

Reduce Back Pain While You Exercise
If you have low back pain, your biggest concern is simple: “Will this make things worse?”

At Healthy Back, our approach is built on one principle: No Pain. More Gain.
You don’t need to push through pain to make progress. The right movement should help your back feel better—not worse.

Exercise That Works With Your Back
Not all movement is helpful when your back is sensitive. By identifying your Directional Preference, you start with movements your back responds well to—often reducing pain as you move, rather than aggravating it.

Progress Without Setbacks
Start where your back feels safe and progress gradually as your strength improves—without a “push through it” mindset. Real progress comes from consistency, not flare-ups.

Short, Manageable Sessions
Each session in our Take a Class series includes a series of targeted exercises completed in around 20–30 minutes, designed to reduce irritation while still building strength safely. Or you can Design Your Workout to customize the content and time to give you exactly what you need.

The Result
Over time, you’ll learn which movements help your back, how to adjust on more sensitive days, and when you’re ready to progress—building confidence in your movement and helping you return to the activities you enjoy.

Supports to Troubleshoot Pain and Ensure Muscle Activation

Troubleshooting Pain in Other Areas

Troubleshooting Pain in Other Areas
When you’re exercising with back pain, it’s not uncommon to have discomfort in other areas like the neck, shoulders, hips, or knees.

Most issues aren’t setbacks—they’re signals. They usually mean a movement needs a small adjustment, the level may be too challenging (for now), or your body is compensating in a way that can be corrected.

Quick, Practical Solutions
Our Troubleshooting videos help you identify the cause of discomfort and make simple adjustments so you can continue exercising safely—without stopping altogether or pushing through pain.

Areas Covered:

  • Neck and upper back
  • Shoulders
  • Knees
  • Hips and back clicks
  • Other compensating joints

The Result
When you know how to adapt, you stay consistent, avoid unnecessary setbacks, and keep building strength safely—with confidence in your movement.

Ensure the Right Muscles Are Working

One of the most common questions during exercise is:
“Am I using the right muscles?”

Even when your form looks correct, you may not always feel the right muscles working. When that happens, your back may not get the support it needs—and other areas can start to compensate.

When You Need More Than Technique
If you’ve watched the technique video but something still doesn’t feel right, our Tips and Tricks for Muscle Activation videos help you take the next step.

They’re designed to help you:

  • Recognize what you should be feeling
  • Improve muscle activation
  • Make small adjustments that change how an exercise works

So instead of guessing, you can quickly correct the movement and get more out of every repetition.

Why It Matters
Often, it’s not about doing a different exercise—it’s about doing the same exercise better.

When the right muscles are working:

  • Movements feel more controlled
  • Strain on your back and joints is reduced
  • Strength develops where you need it most

The Result
Better activation leads to more effective exercise, improved support for your back, and greater confidence in how your body moves.

Stay Safe Every Step of the Way

If you have low back pain, safety isn’t optional—it’s essential.

You may be wondering:

  • Will this make things worse?
  • Could I hurt myself?
  • Can I trust this program?

The Healthy Back program is designed to answer those questions with confidence. While no exercise program can guarantee you won’t feel some discomfort when starting, every part of this system is built to help you move safely and progressively.

A Safe, Structured Approach
From identifying your Directional Preference to progressing through structured levels, the program guides you toward movements your back can tolerate—helping reduce the risk of flare-ups while building strength over time.

If you’re working with a healthcare provider, the Design Your Own Workout option allows you to follow prescribed levels and tailor your sessions to match their guidance.

You’re never pushed into exercises that are too difficult or inappropriate. Instead, you progress step by step, learning what feels right for your body.

Work With Your Healthcare Provider
Healthy Back is not a substitute for care from your physiotherapist, chiropractor, or other healthcare professional. We recommend consulting your provider before starting to ensure the program is appropriate for you.

You can also share our downloadable forms with your provider so they can help guide exercise choices based on your specific condition.

Why We Use Directional Preference
This program does not diagnose or replace professional assessment. It uses Directional Preference—the position where your back feels most comfortable—to help guide exercise selection.

Because back pain varies from person to person, this approach allows the program to adapt to your body rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all routine.

If you’re unsure of your Directional Preference, you can use the self-assessment, consult your provider, or begin in a neutral position and adjust based on how your back responds.

The Result
You feel safe, supported, and in control—so you can move with confidence and build a stronger, more reliable back.
